The person who first saw biofitum for the first time in his life might think that in front of him is some kind of fern. Well, if the plant has already managed to acquire a trunk, then perhaps the thought of a miniature palm tree flickers. But this is not both. In front of him is just a grassy perennial of the sorrel family.
In crevices of rocks, on mountain slopes, in river valleys, and sometimes along roadsides in the tropical countries of Africa and Asia, this strange plant of the genus Biofitum grows. Its unusualness lies primarily in the leaves. More precisely, in the ability of one leaf to form along the petiole from any external influence: from the blow of the breeze, from raindrops and, of course, from touch. And then transfer it through a chain reaction to other leaves. This is due to a change in turgor pressure in the cells, but one way or another, looking at it is quite exciting.
The genus biofitum has about 70 species of perennials and annuals. True, in room culture, only one species is widespread - the sensitive bio-phytum (B.Sensitivum). Its name clearly conveys the above plant feature. The name of the genus, however, also speaks - it is translated from Greek as "living plant".
Leaves, as already noted, are reminiscent of the fern fronds in their elegance and shape. But a single bare stalk with leaves growing from its very upper part is associated with a palm tree for many. Here are just the dimensions of this "palm" tiny - a plant in height does not exceed 30cm.
Biofitum, unlike fern, blooms and under favorable conditions this process can continue with small interruptions throughout the year. Petals are colored in orange, yellow or pink.
Features of home care
If you take into account the peculiarities of the places in which the biofitum lives in its homeland, then in normal room conditions it will be difficult for it. It is easy to give bright diffused light to him - just put the plant under a lamp or on any window except the south one. The required temperature of + 22 ° С- + 28 ° С in the summer, and not lower than + 16 ° С in the winter is also quite simple. But where can he find high humidity, especially in winter? There is a solution, given the small size of the tropical guest. The ideal location for the biofitum is a terrarium, florarium or any sufficiently large transparent container. It will be best to compose a composition from it and other small plants, with similar moisture requirements (arrowroot, ferns, cryptanthus).
With separate open content, you can still recommend a bathroom if it has a window. The requirements for irrigation at the biofitum are standard: the earth should be moist all the time, but not wet. Use warm and soft water.
Transplantation, reproduction, problems.
Biofituma also has a very sensitive root system. It needs to be transplanted over-carefully, preferably just overloading an earthen lump. Adult plants no longer need a transplant, moreover, this plant is by no means a long-liver - its average lifespan is 3-4 years. It is better to pick up soil slightly acidic, nutritious and easy. Ready soil mix for senpolia is suitable. Drainage is required.
For top dressing, it is better to alternate mineral fertilizers with organic ones, be sure to dilute the standard portion twice. It is necessary to feed biofitum only in the warm season once every two to three weeks.
The plant propagates easily with its own seeds, which are formed in abundance after the fruits ripen. If protective measures are not taken, then the seeds will be scattered around the entire perimeter of biofitum growth, including in neighboring pots.
They sprout easily and must be transplanted into separate containers when forming several leaves. Because at a more advanced age, fragile roots can be easily damaged.
If the plant is kept in a terrarium, then problems and pests should not be feared. Otherwise, biofitum becomes an attractive prey for many indoor pests. Insecticide treatments help, but not for long.
